Shopee Malaysia, Lazada and foodpanda all insist on a Malaysian mobile number: you cannot sign up, log in from a new device or add a bank card without a six-digit OTP landing on a +60 number. That is fine if you live here with a Maxis or CelcomDigi SIM. It is a wall if you are an overseas buyer, a Singaporean who shops on Shopee MY, a seller running a second store, or someone whose old number is already tied to another Shopee account.

Be clear about what this is for. Shopee will send future OTPs, such as for password resets or card changes, to the same number, and by then it will be back in the pool. Use a temporary number for the sign-up or a one-off verification, then change the account's phone number to one you control from inside the Shopee app, where it asks for an OTP on the old number first: do that while the number is still yours.

Will Shopee accept a temporary number?
Yes for sign-up and OTP login: the numbers are real Malaysian SIMs. Shopee does block numbers that have already been registered, which the route success rate reflects. A rejected number is refunded automatically.
I am outside Malaysia. Do I need a VPN?
Not for the OTP. Shopee checks the number, not where you are. Some users do see a location prompt in the app; that is separate from the phone verification.
Can I use the same number again next week?
No. One-time numbers go back to the pool after the order closes. Change the account phone number to your own SIM right after signing up.
Does this work for Shopee seller accounts?
Sign-up, yes. Seller verification also asks for ID and bank details that are unrelated to the phone number.
What about Grab or Touch 'n Go?
